Description

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Health Professions (CHP) invites applications for the position of Director of the Occupational Therapy Division. The Occupational Therapy (OT) Division is one of three in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences along with Physical Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology. The OT Division hosts two academic programs: the MUSC Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program (recently transitioned from a longstanding Master’s program - ranked in the top 10% of OT programs in the nation by US News & World Report), and the online Post-Professional Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program that was launched in 2019. The Entry-Level OTD Program has been granted Pre-Accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).

As part of the greater Medical University of South Carolina, the OT Division is an integral part of the state’s only academic health sciences center known for its excellence in interprofessional education. In addition, CHP is ranked 4th in the nation in terms of total NIH funding among Schools of Allied Health & Health Professions. OT faculty and students collaborate with a broad range of educators, clinicians, and researchers across the state and several faculty hold dual appointments across CHP and in other MUSC Colleges. Further, the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences also is home of a newly launched Neurologic Rehabilitation Institute that is an interdisciplinary clinical, educational, and research outpatient facility. Through its strong history, outstanding record of educating occupational therapists, and dedication to interprofessional education and research, the OT Division is poised to enhance the Department’s and College's overall goal of achieving national distinction in education, research, and service.

MUSC CHP seeks candidates who have the academic leadership experience to provide strategic vision for the advancement of the OT Division within this highly successful academic and research-intensive setting. The Division Director is responsible for the management and administration of the two OT academic programs, including planning, evaluation, budgeting, faculty recruitment and staff selection, maintenance of accreditation for the entry-level program, and commitment to professional development strategies. Excellent leadership skills, experience in mentorship, and the ability to work collaboratively are all essential.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess a PhD or other earned research doctorate, however individuals with clinical doctorates with extraordinary experience also may be considered. Candidates initially must be certified by NBCOT and eligible for licensure in occupational therapy in the state of South Carolina. Candidates must have a minimum of 8 years of documented experience in the field of occupational therapy and at least 3 years of experience in a full-time academic appointment with teaching responsibilities at the post-baccalaureate level.  Candidates are expected to have academic administrative experience, a track record of research, scholarship, instruction, and clinical practice. Candidates must meet the MUSC CHP criteria for appointment at the level of Associate Professor or higher. Final rank and salary of the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience.

MUSC has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824 and is the state’s only comprehensive academic health sciences center with a unique charge to serve the state through education, research, and patient care. The main campus is located on more than 50 acres in the city of Charleston. MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and 700 residents in six colleges (Dental Medicine, Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy) at the baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and other professional levels. The teaching staff is comprised of approximately 1,500 faculty members. As the third largest non-federal employer in South Carolina, the university and its affiliates have collective annual budgets in excess of $3 billion, with an annual economic impact of more than $3.8 billion and annual research funding in excess of $271 million.  MUSC is committed to providing culturally competent care and ensuring that organizational priorities and goals pertaining to equity, inclusion, and excellence are institutionalized, sustained, and measured in order to “create an inclusive experience for the lives we touch.” Every college has a designated faculty liaison for diversity, and all leaders are required to complete diversity education and training to combat unconscious bias on an annual basis. All new employee orientations include an introduction to MUSC’s diversity goals and values. For two consecutive years (2018 & 2019), Forbes has listed MUSC as one of America’s Best Employers for Diversity. MUSC ranked 13 out of 500 organizations. Moreover, MUSC ranked number 3 out of 30 institutions listed in the education category. Additionally, for four years in a row (2017 – 2020) MUSC has received the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT in Diversity, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. The organization has also designated MUSC a Diversity Champion for three consecutive years (2018 – 2020). MUSC was among 46 recipients selected in 2020 for this honor, which is the only national diversity award in higher education.
